Meet Our Christian Heroes!
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
"The Book Of Saints" contains brief biographies, averaging about one page each, of hundreds of saints. The biographies are arranged by feast days. Not all days are covered, but a wide variety of saints are featured, ranging from the well known to the obscure. I enjoyed reading this book and plan to keep it handy for future reference. It gives the reader an insight into many of our Christian heroes. One test that I apply to books is whether it inspires me to read more. This passes that test with flying colors.
Meet the Saints

To clarify the bylines listed, the drawings are by George Angelini, a well known illustrator of Roman Catholic books for children, and the text is by Passionist Father Victor Hoagland. Here's an excellent introduction for school-age children to the saints whose feast days are celebrated throughout the liturgical year. The book is written in vocabulary children will understand, but it in no sense "talks down" or "makes cute" with the narrative. Fr Hoagland has a good sense of how to write for a broad audience and these brief histories hit just the right note for those who are beginning to learn about saints -- whether as patrons, as individuals whose feasts we remember throughout the year, or as examples to apply to daily life. That the book is organized according to the calendar makes it a nifty resource for families who want to acquaint children with the saints of the church year. The book encourages further exploration of saints' lives. Thus, I have used it repeatedly as a gift for First Communions and even, when appropriate, for Confirmations.

This is a book that is hard to put down! It is truly an inspiration to read about the lives of these holy men and women. This was my first book about saints and a great way to start. The stories are not too long and full of information to help increase your faith!
This book is for those who know nothing about saints.

I recommend The Book of Saints to those people who know nothing about saints and to those who really want to know more about the lives of saints. This book in simple terms explains the lives before martyrs became saints and what obsticles they went through to achieve such recognition as like sainthood. The authors explain to readers in example how simple people became saints because of their strong beliefs in themselves and their god. I recommend this book to readers who are interested in religion, history and human interest stories.
