This is a reprint edition of a book originally published in 1916 by George G Harrap and Co., London. From the notes on the dustjacket: "Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!" The magic of Treasure Island still enthralls everyone with its tales of datardly and adventure. In this book of sea-faring lore are contained the thrilling adventures of the great pirates of history. Pirates have been in existence for over 2000 years. A band of pirates captured Julius Caesar when he was a young man, but he escaped, captured the pirate band and executed them all. Another famous pirate was Rolf, son of Ragnvald the Powerful, who helped King Alfred beat the Viking invaders at the Battle of Maldon, and earned himself the Dukedom of Normandy, where he governed long and with justice. Then there are the famous Corsairs of the Mediteranean. Sidi ben Muza who became Governor of Rhodes and Uruj Barbarossa who founded the dynasty of the pirates of Algiers. Algiers remained a pirate stronghold for over 250 years until the battle of Algiers when Ed Pellow, Lord Exmouth, shattered the pirate stronghold forever.
