It lay at the bottom of an Israeli archaelogical dig, as it had for two thousand years- a secret tightly held in the enveloping dark of it's burial chamber, soft clay bricks memorializing in lonely eternity the inscription on an identifying clay disk, "King of the Jews", and an enormous rock sealing the entrance ensuring undisturbed rest throughout the centuries....

A pocketbook Da Vinci Code

I read this book 20 years ago and the plot and dialog still stick with me. I have lived in Israel and fond the geography and locations familiar as well as the politics discussed in the book. It hought it was a great book in that it presented a mainstream and outsiders view of the Jesuit Priesthood which I found very interesting and compelling and true. As for teh love story, not so probably, not so compelling, not so convincing. But the epilogue...worth every page leading up to it. Thank you Richard Sapir.

Book much better than other reviewer suggests ...

First of all, I would not consider this book a thriller by any stretch. It includes several important bits of dialogue and thought provoking events pertaining to the discovery of the body of Jesus. The priest does fall in love with the female scientist, but only after his faith is shaken to the core by the discovery and subsequent scientific evidence pertaining to the possible discovery of Jesus. I think it is quite stupid to simply label the priest "horny." In addition, the author has a decent grasp of archaelogical evidence found in the Israel area and a good knowledge of biblical scholarship to date. It also includes some interesting events pertaining to the politics of the area as well. I do not consider myself a book reviewer, but I wanted to give my impressions of the quality of this book. Since the possible discovery of the bone box of Jesus' brother James, this book has even more importance today. What if Christ were found? An interesting question that I think Sapir did an effective job writing about.
