An Atypical Western

Guthridge's Bloodletter takes place in the Colorado Territory after the Civil War. The title refers to the term used for a doctor, but also ties into the letting of blood through gunfights. The characters are atypical, which makes the novel much more interesting than an average western. Details are excellent and enable a clear vision of the time, the place and the characters. Guthridge is an able and gifted writer.

Hilarious, accurate rendering of the West

"Bloodletter" in the Old West referred to gunslingers, doctors, and people who endured pain for idealism. Jesse Bownman, an ex-gunhand, has returned after the Civil War--as a doctor. He must choose between healing and revenge against those who tarred and feathered him the last time he was in the Colorado Territory. There are other "fast guns" with which he must contend: the sadistic Yallo Zelnick; and Joshua .44-40, a 15-year-old retarded dwarf with snake speed. The book is a rare blend of superb prose, fast action, raw Western humor, and rich historical detail by a writer who has won a world award as a historical novelist.
