Great Book

I recently ordered several fairly new books on dollmaking, but was somewhat disappointed in them. Many newer books seem to offer little variety and make the craft too artistic and complex for my tastes. This book by Mabs Tyler, which I just happened across at the library, has a lovely variety of dolls (rag dolls, puppets, games to be made with dolls, wire dolls etc.). I loved it so much I am purchasing my own copy. If you are interested in working with children on making dolls, then this is the book for you. But even for someone who wants to make a doll for a child or grandchild, this book offers a great selection of simple, yet attractive projects. Highly recommended.

Charming folk-type dolls

I happened across this book at a used book store, and was charmed. The cover photos show some fifty dolls, all made from Mabs Tyler's designs. In the section on Soft Dolls, Ms Tyler gives patterns for 13 different dolls, variations on the basic rag doll. These dolls are all different sizes, each with a slightly different-shaped body, each with its own face. It's not obvious why all these different dolls are included, but the variety gives a richness to the book. (The patterns are on a grid for enlarging; they are not full-sized.) Many of the dolls have features cut from felt and sewn or glued on. (Ms. Tyler carefully explains how to cut a mouth from a rectangle of red felt.) Often the dolls' eyes are made with white showing above the iris, giving them a rather intense gaze. (Look in the mirror and lift your upper eyelids so that the white shows above the iris; you'll see what I mean.) There are also chapters on other types of dolls--wire-framed dolls, stick puppets, dolls made on cardboard tubes. Colored photos of every doll are included. I enjoy just looking at this book. Mabs Tyler's dolls have lots of personality. Looking at them inspires me to give zing and personality to the dolls I make. Her dolls make me smile.
