Quaility content and style.

There are some important elements that make this a great book. One is that the author knows where-of he writes with a passion that is evident. Another is that he lived it and writes what he knows best. As a professor of English he certainly has all the tools as well as the knowledge and the restraint to use them judiciously. Another thing that makes this book so enjoyable is that it could be the experiences of the average hunter. So many books chronicle "once in a lifetime" experiences reserved for celebrities or others with enough money or connections to take advantage of them. Finally because it is a collection of short articles originally published in Field and Stream it is great bedtime reading conducive to a nice relaxing end of the day.

Literature as it was meant to be

Relatively few post-60s readers are familiar with Havilah Babcock, and tragically, virtually no "scholarly" American Literature professors have read him. But Babcock, the former Head of the English Dept. at the University of South Carolina was a not only a superb writer and Master story teller - easily equal to Mr. Twain, but a warm and learned student of Man. Though the delightful charm and wit of his stories are couched in the Outdoors pursuits, they are also rich in Americana and there can be few thoughtful people who wouldn't walk away from his writing with a smile. "The Best of Babcock" is literally a feast of gentle Humor, clean entertainment and the demonstration of writing skill that remains unsurpassed nearly a century later. Being able to read "The Best of Babcock" is one of the primary advantages to learning how to read in the first place.
