I just love Jan Adkins' books. My introduction to his work came when I pulled the impressive book "Moving Heavy Things" off my brother's bookshelf and then just had to take it home and sit delightedly with its illustrations of how we humans once did by machine power what machines now do thru automation and fossil-fuels. While "The Bakers: A Simple Book About the Pleasures of Baking Bread" is less expansive in its focus, there remains a comforting similarity of Mr. Adkins' drawn lines and his love of homey detail. A short historical overview, with equally short basic recipes that are assembled, left to ferment and develop, then baked with Dad, Son, & their Reader, this is a pleasant book for any age, and like good bread, all the better when enjoyed together.
