I'm a huge Richard Laymon fan, and this book was recommended to me by some folks on his website. I was suprised at how much I enjoyed it, and at just how much it remided me of Richard's work. It's very graphic and gorey, and has some hot sex scenes as well. The storyline is creepy and will make you want to see what happens next, and who is involved. I recommend this one for anyone who enjoys a good horror novel with blood and gore. I liked it so much I've ordered a few more of his novels.
Ed Lee Rocks!

Edward Lee is a sick, sick man. A very talented sick man who writes crazy good horror. If you've never been corrupted by an Edward Lee novel, well, lucky you, because you can start right here, right now. THE BACKWOODS is classic Edward Lee--murder, torture, dismemberment, perverse and violent sex, gore, sex, mayhem, terror, more sex. And a damn good story to boot. Washington DC attorney Patricia White takes a leave of absence from her practice to return to her boondocks Chesapeake Bay hometown to comfort her sister, Judy, whose rednecky ape of a husband, Dwayne, has been viciously murdered. Patricia's arrival is greeted by more grisly deaths in which the townsfolk are murdered horribly: strung up and butchered like hogs, or buried alive, or gleefully hacked up for sport. The town itself is peopled by strangely secretive people who are not particularly forthcoming about the weird happenings. In the midst of all the horror, Patricia, who has left her loving husband at home, finds herself experiencing intense sexual fantasies about her past. If you like your horror served raw and on the bone, you will enjoy gnawing on this fast and furious novel by the author of one of my all-time favorite novels, THE BIGHEAD. Rock on, Edward Lee!
one of ed lee's best ever

Lee's one of my top 5 favorite horror writers, and the Backwoods in one reason why. This is verymuch an occult horror story with a sophisticated murder plot weaving through it. Lee's use of a creepy boondocks setting isn't cliched at all, it just makes the book more powerful and scary. Some of the scenes are so morbid and shockking, I couldn't get them out of my head when I finished. (especially the scene in the woods involving Wilferd and Ethel, one of Lee's harshest scenes ever). The sex is more refined that in past books and a lot more effective, some of it read like fine erotica, then Lee peppers it all with hangings, curses, rapes, whacked out autopsies, and one of the most gruelling offstage murders in fiction, and also an outrageous ending you never see coming. Lee outdid himself with this one. He needs to do a sequel and give us more history of "The Squatters." If you only read one horror novel this year, this should be it.
Ed Lee's THE BACKWOODS - not as bad as some folks would have you believe...

Nope, this isn't BIGHEAD. Nope, this isn't the gore-a-minute-barbed-wire-gags-and-saguara-buttplugs that Ed Lee fans love, but it's still a darned good read. You really like the character, and the final few chapters offer a couple of chucklesome gag-a-maggot scenes that are guaranteed to please. Folks, be warned. Ed Lee is writing for Leisure here, not Bloodletting or Delerium. He's got to soften it a bit for the mainstream consumption. Only certain stuff will fly in this neck of the woods. I talked with Ed a few weeks ago and he assured me he'd be coming out with some dark small press efforts as well as continuing his efforts at Leisure. Give it a try. It's a good primer for those trying to work up their nerve to climb into one of Ed Lee's more notorius gut-plungers such as THE GOON. Yours in horror, Steve Vernon
IT'S ABOUT TIME!

Edward Lee returns to his "backwoods" roots (CREEKERS, BIGHEAD, GHOULS) in this new one that starts out with a weird murder mystery in a hillbilly setting and then turns into an occult extravaganza full of wild sex, ,rednecks, gore (especially some really perverted ax-work) and an ending that totally took me by surprise. Not as twisted as CREEKERS (my favorite by Lee) but deeper characters and a heavier erotic tone. This one I couldn't put down!
