A yank saves the Queen

I first read this adventure novel when it was first published in the late 1980's. An exciting thriller about a race against time to stop a madman ploting to kill the Queen of England. Although the action takes place entirely in the UK, the hero of the story is an american CIA agent stationed in London who is brought into the case because early clues suggest an american angle. I've always wondered if this version of the book is one that was published in the United States, and a slightly different version featuring a british agent was distributed across the pond.
