Book Overview

In this new edition, authors Shapiro and Carlson draw from Eastern wisdom and practices as well as Western psychological theory and science to explore why mindful awareness is integral to the therapeutic healing process and to show clinicians how to connect with this deeper awareness.

Intention is fundamental to any project, endeavor, or journey. Related to intention is the concept of mindfulness - the awareness that arises through intentionally attending to oneself and others in an open, caring, and nonjudgmental way. Authors Shapiro and Carlson draw from Eastern wisdom and practices as well as Western psychological theory and science to explore why mindful awareness is integral to the therapeutic healing process and to show clinicians how to connect with this deeper awareness. This second edition is an accessible discussion of the fundamentals and also contains new sections describing the latest research on the neuroscience of mindfulness and mechanisms of change. Integrating the art and science of mindfulness to inspire greater well-being in both clinicians and their patients, this volume bridges a gap between therapist and patient, reminding us that we are all human beings wanting health, happiness, and freedom from suffering.

Mindfulness Meditation in Clinical Settings

This book lives up to its title. It provides a clearly written introduction to the art of practicing and using mindfulness meditation in clinical settings, and a good survey of the scientific research. The book includes a valuable summary of the benefits that therapists themselves may gain from mindfulness meditation. This is an excellent introduction to the field.

a great read for anyone

I bought this book as a gift for a family member who is a therapist but ended up enjoying it immensely myself. Its packed with insightful theory, practical advice and illustrative examples!

A bridge for two worlds.

I've been working in a pressure-filled environment for some time and haven't been able to find a book that will help me de-stress in a positive and enlightening manner. I picked up this book on a whim and haven't regretted it. Engaging and down to earth, it has become my newest outlet after a long work week.

An insightful and fascinating look at western science and eastern thought
