The Ancestral History of John William Leppard and Geneva Evalina LaFarr

This is the ancestral history of my maternal grandparents, John William Leppard, and Geneva Evaline LaFarr Leppard. They both were descended from a long line of French Canadians. This history traces four of their ancestors through Canada and back into France. Not all of their ancestral lines could be tracked back to France and there are two non-French ancestral lines, the Phillips family on the Leppard side which traces to Wales, and the Harper family on the LaFarr side probably came from Scotland or Ireland. The families of Leppard and LaFarr trace their entry into the United States through Canada. LaFarr is a "Dit" version of the French name LaForest. The name Leppard comes from the French name LaPorte. Both the LaFarrs and Leppards lived at one time in the area northeast of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. This book contains a brief history of the Fille du Roi as the LaFarrs have twelve Fille du Roi in their ancestry. There is also a brief piece on French "Dit" names. The LaFarrs are descendent from King Hugh Capet, the first Capetian king of France. The details of that descent are given in this book. The Families of LaFarr and Leppard came together in a section of Fort Edward, NY known as "Little Canada". "Little Canada" was located just north of the center of Fort Edward up against the banks of the Hudson River. Many towns and villages along the canals, rivers and railroad tracks in the Hudson and Mohawk valleys had areas called "Little Canada" or "Little France", as well as areas called "Little Italy" and "Little Germany". Most of the residents of these ethnic enclaves journeyed along the easily-traveled rivers, canals and tracks in search of jobs. Most of the "Little Canada" type places were formed about 1850. Family histories given in this book include Laporte (Leppard) back to 1571, LaFarr to 1631, Gauthier to 1736, Phillips to 1814, Coderre to 1768, Hubert to 1624, Tremblay to 1719, Harper to 1785, Robitaille to 1603, and Harnois to 1715.
