Book Overview

The American King, by Ben Rhodes, is a novel published in 1898 by the American Publishing Company in San Francisco as the first volume of its Empire Series. Set partly in California, it opens at the Meredith home, where talk of the weather is interrupted by the arrival of a distressed Mrs. Hartwell. From its chapter titles, the story moves through mining stock dealings and life in a mining camp, to New York and Paris society, and into the political debates of 1890s America - including a chapter on "Senator Teller's Great Speech" and another on "The Relative Values of Silver and Gold" - before arriving at the title chapter, "The American King."
