I started subscribing to AMERICAN HERITAGE magazine in the mid-1960's and got caught up with their hardcover books too. For the price, then and now, they are more than worth what you would pay. This present AMERICAN HERITAGE book published in 1970 (by McGraw-Hill) was the last in a connecting line of history books that AH had begun years before with the book, World War I written by S.L.A Marshall. Published by Simon and Shuster in 1964, it was and remains, a very nice volume. Later a volume on World War II came along, as well as a single volume, or a double boxed set of volumes, on the American Civil War with narrative written by Bruce Catton. In the 1970s to fill the gaps between these books American Heritage released such volumes as The Confident Years (the period between the Civil War and World War I) and then the volume discussed here, 20s and 30s, which pretty much was the end-of-the-line for American Heritage publishing. As far as known, they never did much on the 40s, 50, or 60s. It's a shame to see this wonderful work sell for such a low price, though it is a reprint, while some of the original volumes do sell for much higher prices. My copy is an original print, with dust jacket in black with 20s in blue, and 30s in red; a very plain yet at the same time a very striking dust jacket. For both a picture and narrative book by Edmund Stillman it is a very lovely piece of work. Any of these books of the period, as well as The Thirteen Colonies, The Making of a Nation (1783-1860) , or the Revolution are all prize books that one now generally will only see in 2nd hand bookstores, truly a shame. The Thirteen Colonies and The Making of a Nation also were available in boxed sets with the second volumes concerning the antiques of those years. One of the last sets I purchased was the Writers and Artists boxed set of two volumes. For general narrative history, no one could beat American Heritage's treatment, which for me subtly changed when Forbes purchased the magazine. Oh, well, that too is part of any historical cycle. Semper Fi.
