A truly excellent guide book

Make sure you get this guidebook BEFORE you actually visit Alhambra. The descriptions of the site and surrounding gardens in the Lonely Planet and Fodor's are worthless compared to the wealth of information and the beautifully-rendered illustrations to be found in this book. Sure it's a little pricey, but it's definitely worth the money and will be a great resource to take away with you afterwards. The background sections on the Moorish kingdom of Granada and its successor states is excellent too as are the short sections on Islam and the roles played by different groups within the culture of Moorish Spain. For those who are interested in Islamic decorative arts there are nicely-illustrated sections on tile work, stucco and architectural forms. The section on the Generalife (the gardens surrounding Alhambra) is excellent also, and contains a very nice guide to some of the flowers in the gardens. While certainly not an in-depth scholarly book, this is a nicely-crafted, informative and accessible detailed guidebook. Just the right length for those of you who visit Alhambra on a sunny day and who want lots of excellent pictures to look at on the airplane ride home.
