Book Overview

As this delightful story opens, something strange is going on The waters of the Laughing Brook and Smiling Pool have become a mere trickle, causing alarm among the creatures of the Green Forest. It seems Jerry Muskrat's cousin, Paddy the Beaver, has come south to make himself a new home. That means he had to stop the waters that flowed in the Laughing Brook and Smiling Pool to make a fine new pond for himself and a comfortable home of sticks and mud...

A Charming Lesson on the Values of Hard Work

Paddy the Beaver is an eager work-a-holic who sets to the task of building a dam and a new home. He is met with challenges along the way in the form of a cunning predator, unpopularity with the other residents of the forest and the distrust of his cousin. In one way after another (I don't want to spoil the book) he conquers all these hindrances, has a happy ending and leaves the readers of his tale with rich morals on the values of working hard and using their heads. Broken up into short chapters, this book is perfect to read aloud to children as a bed time story in easy to read and comprehend installments. Older children (9 or above) will have fun enjoying this book by reading it themselves. Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book. The Mischievous Hare

thorpn W. Burgess animal story

A wonderful animal story for older children to read to themselves and also a good story to read aloud to your young children or grandchildren.

Great read for young readers

My girlfriend told me she had read this series as a child but thought they were out of print. I purchased them as a gift for her family to share and they love them. I've read some of the stories at night to my children - 3, 6 and 7. They enjoy the stories. My 7 year old has read some but it may be more appropriate for an older reader. Some of the antics take place over several short chapters and need to be summarized so the kids can follow - for example, one animal tricks another animal into going into a barrel lying on its side at the top of a hill (can you see a problem!). The barrel rolls down the hill and the animal looks out and sees another animal who gets the blame. Overall, fun for kids and grownups (MUCH better than Junie B. Jones!)
