Must read for kids

This book is one of my favorites. Milly Molly Mandy lives in the small white cottage with the thatched roof with an array of adult relatives. The stories are a delight for young girls (and boys? One of the two best friends of the protagonist is a boy). Each chapter is a separate story--no cliffhangers at bedtime! Written in 19?12? (motorcars are a rarity) in a simple but always interesting and entertaining way, the stories show appreciation of small things--but are not overtly didactic. MMM is a favorite character and the catchphrases of the book still echo in my mind years after having (repeatedly) read these stories to my daughter. The book is well known in the UK; it was recommended to me there.
