The Adventures of Elizabeth in Rugen is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Elizabeth von Arnim. The book was published in 1904, a few years after von Arnim visited Rugen with her maid, a... This description may be from another edition of this product.
In 1901 Elizabeth Von Arnim went on yet another trip to Rugen, Germany's largest island. She took along her maid and her driver and was gone for 10 days. It evidently wasn't all that exciting. So, when writing this book, she decided to "invent" some adventures. If you love reading Von Arnim, though, you know that it is not about the plot so much as it is her way with words. The subtle jabs at convention. Her insightful observations on human nature. Her almost poetic way of writing about nature. Still, there is a charming story here, with amusing characters who continually turn up to spoil the author's quest for solitude. And it is interesting to read about what tourism was like in Rugen over 100 years ago, when one traveled by horse and carriage and found lodging where one could. If you are a Von Arnim fan, you will enjoy this book. After Enchanted April, my favorite.
Delightful travel book!

This is a delightful travel book featuring Elizabeth's usually sly and ironic view of places, people and things. Her defense of idleness and shirking responsibility is a jewel!
The Adventures of Elizabeth in Rugen

It is so wonderful to see that Elizabeth von Arnim's books are being reprinted. I find it difficult to pick a favorite, because all her books are delightful. This book is wonderful because it is so full of humor. I laughed out loud at some scenes! How Elizabeth "escapes" from different groups of people on Rugen and her descriptions of them make fun reading. I hope this and other books by Elizabeth that are being reprinted will spark a whole new generation of fans. She is a writer who doesn't deserve to be forgotten.
