A GREAT Book on the Actor's Career

This is the best book I've read on career development for actors. There are a lot of books out there about how to succeed in "The Business" but I've yet to find one quite like this. If it has any weakness it is that some information might be outdated. The book was published in 1987 and there have been no revisions or updated editions since then as far as I know. However, most of the principles and lessons which Brandstein so eloquently describes in this book are timeless. She addresses confidence, networking and creating luck, among other things. If you absolutely need the latest information about headshots, agencies, using the internet to promote yourself, etc. then get that information from other sources--and still buy this book! It gives the reader wonderful, practical advice about nurturing his/her acting career. After reading this book I felt more optimistic about my prospects as an actor, because I knew there were definite steps I could take to realize my goals. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of this book is the way Brandstein addresses the psychological aspects of the actor's career. She explains certain habits and modes of thinking that lead to failure and encourages a mindset that leads to success. Once again, this is all done in a very practical and accessible way. I highly recommend it to anyone who is an actor or who is considering pursuing a career as an actor. It's equally valuable for beginning actors and veterans. If you are in the beginning stages of your career this book is a must read. Likewise if you are at a stage in your career where you feel "stuck", depleted, or feel the need for a change of direction. I happened to stumble upon this book at a library and I'm so glad I did, because it's an absolute treasure. I don't even know it it's still in print but I was thrilled to get my own copy.
