Sometimes We Need It

Would you be offended by this book's, title? Mark Atteberry gives us a top 10 list that is meant to check our attitudes at the door. Dumb Things Christians do: #1 - Slinging Mud on the Bride of Christ. #2 - Winning People to the Church Rather than to the Lord. #3 - Living Below the Level of Our Beliefs. #4 - Speaking Above the Level of Our Knowledge. #5 - Hopping from Church to Church. #6 - Fighting Among Ourselves. #7 - Missing Golden Opportunities. #8 - Settling for Mediocrity. #9 - Allowing Wolves to Live Among the Sheep. #10 - Accepting the Unacceptable. Some of the "dumb things" may seem a bit harsh, but Atteberry fleshes them out in a way that causes you to look inward instead of playing the blame game. And I think we have become very efficient at blaming others. The 10 Dumbest Things Christians Do might seem like another post-modern, hand slap against Christians, and it probably is. That may turn a lot of people off. There are times, though, when people need some correction. It's not a bad thing to honestly look at how you live and make changes if/when necessary.

Practical and easy to read

With wit, humor, candor, and insight, Mark Atteberry has written a straightforward book that needs to be read by many "Christians." This is an extremely readable book that touches on many of the ways Christians sling mud on the Church, the Bride of Christ. I just so happen to see a bumper sticker today that read, "Jesus called, He wants His religion back." And I think the message of this book will be a wake up call to those who do dumb and harmful things in the name of Christianity.

Excellent discussion topics

I used this book for a class at church. The way it covers real situations and personalities generated lots of thoughtful discussion. I definitely recommend it for people who want to learn more about their own interactions with other church members and seekers.

Instructive Mirror and Lessons for Christians

Mark Atteberry draws on 30+ years of ministry to present the 10 dumbest things Christians do. His instructive and revealing writing offers sometimes gentle, sometimes stinging rebukes of some Christians' behavior in and out of the church. Chances are that you will see yourself in big and small ways in some of these dumb moves; you will certainly recognize some of the dumb behavior as resembling something or someone from a church you attended--I did on both counts. This is a book that will help you behave better and be a better witness for Christ. It will also help you be a better church member or leader, due to its lessons for personal behavior and insight to help spot trouble for the church before it blossoms. Atteberry seasons the lessons with humor, anecdotes, experience and scriptures to make this an enjoyable read. This is an excellent tool for Christians. Yup it's Official, We're Dumb!

Mark really nabbed "us" on this one. Christians do some pretty ridiculous stuff that we wouldn't even attempt while in secular society. The church hopping chapter oughta really have some squirm. I'm beginning to really like Marks brand of Christianity its starting to stick out like he's been eating "locusts and honey" for lunch! Get this one but be warned; It'll make you wonder where, why & how your sphere of influence was lost. I'll be the first to say I've committed at least 3 of this books 10 dumb things. Thanks for the "wake up" call. "At a Boy" Atteberry.
