I first became acquainted with Fred Bonnie's writings through a friendship with Theresa Girardin Young who once was married to Fred's brother. They both passed on in 2000, Fred in May, Terry in December. The book Terry first showed me was entitled TOO HOT and was a collection of short stories set in Maine. I saw events from the offset printing business in one of the stories, something I have some familiarity with. Fred did something that is rather difficult for a writer to do, write from the viewpoint of the opposite sex. I think some of what he does with his main character Thanh Ho is show the complex dynamics between couples of different cultures. I found some of it a little awkward, but my daughter reported she could not put the book down, so some of what he wrote must have resonated with her. I don't necessarily consider the ending to be a surprise ending as another reviewer did. Say Hi to Terry for me Fred. She's working for Granta up in heaven in the copy editing department I think. Or else she is co-editing a poetry journal with Chuck Bruehler.
