I learned a lot about Texas Baptists from reading this book. It is well-written, well-researched, and easy to read. I do, however, have three complaints. (1) McBeth does not spend enough time describing the theology of Texas Baptists and major Texas Baptist leaders. I did not learn much, for example, about views that major Texas Baptist leaders held in the 19th century. (2) The history of the last 20 years displays a noticeable moderate bias. McBeth is clearly a strong supporter of Russell Dilday and the current BGCT leadership, and he seems to go out of his way to defend them. (3) In some places, McBeth gets bogged down in institutional histories, describing in minor detail the histories of every obscure agency and board. I realize that to some extent this is unavoidable in an official history. Nevertheless, this causes the narrative to be very boring in some places.
