Same as the second ARCO edition...

First of all, from what I can tell this book is identical with the second ARCO edition of 1993. If you were expecting an update and expansion of that volume then do not buy this edition by a different publisher (unless you are looking for a retest.) Secondly, these books really do seem to be a decent survey of cultural literacy. The tests cover a comprehensive range of subjects: American History; World History; Civics; Geography; Art and Architecture; Music, Myth and Religion; Quotes, Phrases and Aphorisms; American Literature; World Literature; Life Science; Physical Science; Technology; Mathematics and Economics; and Current Events. This is a rare chance to get an objective measurement of what you really know outside of school.

Tests to evaluate your general knowledge of subjects

Do you feel you want to brush up on a subject? Is your American history a little rusty? Do you want to impress someone with your art history knowledge? Essentials of Cultural Literary will provide you with the fundamental knowledge to brush up on a subject. If you enjoy learning, this is a fun way to see where you knowledge stacks up on the scale. After taking each subject test, there are not only answers but detailed explanations of the answers. The tests are not only fun but present a digestible amount of information. This book is certainly an enjoyable way of testing your knowledge on a gamut of subjects. This would make a great book for taking on the plane or waiting in line!

For the compulsive test taker....

I'm sorry, but I just simply love this book. Maybe it is because I am a compulsive test taker. Maybe it is because I get so little chance in this society to demonstrate what I know. Perhaps it is some minor validation that graduating from high school and college with honors wasn't a "fluke." Then again, perhaps it is merely because I scored in the "excellent" category on it's battery of tests. In any case, I highly recommend it to any closet "cognoscentes" out there. Don't worry, everyone has at least one "blind spot"- the other tests even it out. Come to think of it, I know why I love this book- it is because I know that none of the bosses that I've ever had could even manage to score a "fair"....

A great find

I was looking in the library for a book that would keep me intelligent between school semesters, and when I found this book, I was greatly pleased. After I brought it home, my father also discovered in and entirly enjoyed taking each of the 14 tests. I not only kept my brain fresh, I learned some too!
