Enjoyable and informative history of Victorian figure art and artists

It doesn't take long for a student of art history, and particularly of figure painting, to recognize that a progression of subjects, settings, poses and style over the centuries. However, it was unclear to me how and why figure painting advanced so far and so quickly during the 19th Century in Great Britain and Europe. This book clearly explains the situation and introduces the artists and exhibit halls. While the book is fairly well illustrated, as I read this book I found myself repeatly Googling the many artists and works of art that are mentioned, so I wish he'd included a good color image of every work that he mentioned. A helpful companion volume would be 1000 Masterpieces of Painting Nudes, while Undressed Art: Why We Draw might be considered as a modern-day sequel.
