A Book For All Ages

As a 21 year old college student who is more than a few years away from being the parent of a teenager, I have gained a broad range of perspective from reading Tom McMahon's Teen Tips. Not only was I able to relate firsthand to many of the issues presented, but I also came to realize what a complex and educational experience it is for parents in cultivating nurturing relationships with their teens. I appreciated the personal accounts that are so prevalent in this book, as they help to make the approach more personal of the issues at hand. McMahon does not "sugar coat," oversimplify, or overdramatize the issues that he speaks about, which is refreshing and realistic in a time when all too many adults want to be a "pal" instead of a guide to teens. I will definitely keep this book so that I may refer to it in working with adolescents as a teacher, and in parenting teenagers of my own. There is a multitude of creative and loving strategies toward building healthy relationships with teenagers in Tom McMahon's book and I definitely recommend reading it to those who are teachers, and to those who work or live with a teenager.

excellent resource for parents

I had to read Tom McMann's Teen Tips for an adolescent class at csuHayward. I thought it was absolutly excellent. He had wonderful solutions to many problems that every adolescent and parent will go through. He also had parents of adolescents sent in their tips and had them in the book. This was great because it shows that this stuff that he is suggesting actually works. He also made suggestions that he thought were especially important such as listening to the adolescent, teaching them money management and how to pick the battles that you won't regrest later in their lives. I now have a eighteen month old son, and I know it is in the distant future, but I will definetly keep this book and refer back to it when the time come. I feel this is a essential book for any parent. Even if they are still young you will need and love it in the future. I wish my parents were able to use this book as I was growing up, especially the money management part. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

A guide for every parent with teens

In one of my college classes, Adolescence, we read the book Teen Tips and I found it very interesting and helpful. I liked the book so much that I am keeping it instead of returning it at the end of the quarter. Tom McMahon provided so many helpful tips such as getting kids to do chores as well as how to handle peer pressure. He offered insightful ways to handle the day to day problems as well as all the difficult problems adolescent's face. I have a two and a half year old and I know that when my daughter becomes a teen I will be refering back to Tom's wonderful book to help raise her. I definetly recommend this book to anyone with teenagers to help them get through the adolescent years.

Others' experiences are most beneficial!

To better understand teens,we must first realize what kind of dilemas they are faced with. Reading about every day dilemas involving teens and thier parents and effective methods of solving them by other adults and teens is truely beneficial. This "practical survival guide for parents" shows that there are numerous ways of dealing with the same problem, depending on the teen. Not every approach might be for your teen, but you are more than likely to find one that does. Taking another parent's solution and molding it to your teen's needs is a good approach to take. As a future high school teacher, learning about many different methods of teen dilema solving is of great importance to me. Some of the many important topics of Teen Tips are how to communicate effectively, talking about sex, role models, friends, school work & jobs, and taking on responsibilities by teens.I would also like to thank Dr.Carol Becker, from CSUH,for introducing this book to me. This is one book I will not sell back to the bookstore!

review of teen tips

I read Tom McMahon's book, Teen Tips, for a class I took on Adolescence. Usually I would return my books after the quarter but I have decided to hang on to Tom's book because I feel it has some great ideas about how to deal with today's teens. I don't have any kids yet but I can relate to some of the situations that Tom mentions in his book because I was a teen not so long ago. I plan on keeping this book to refer to when I am in a sticky situation with my kids. I believe that Tom has fair ideas that benefit both the teen and the parent. If you have a child who is nearing adolescence I would definitely recommend this book.
