The best learning comes spontaneously!

This is one of my all-time favorite books. The first time I picked it up, I was unable to put it down. Ms. Chenfeld understands what is crucial in childhood and what is not. I am particularly fond of her discussion about dealing with the "wolf at the door" and often refer to it in the teacher trainings and workshops I conduct. The wolf refers to those that are so serious about standards and learning outcomes and so busy measuring children that they have forgotten that the very best learning is spontaneous and fun and emerges from the child.

A must read for all teachers and parents

Teaching in the Key of Life is a simple and engaging read, with profound truths that should be in the library of everyone with a child or who comes in contact with children. Mimi Chenfeld is especially adept at using her thirty six years of experience and the wisdom of children to show us how teaching and learning happen. The chapters are short, the stories poignant and the words of children(learners) teach us so much about how learning occurs. The books' forward says "When learning a swimming stroke, would you like to be told how to do it? Or would you rather have someone show you how it looks and give you the chance to try it out yourself?" The remaining 77 pages are an engaging, humorous, touching tale of what it means to be a teacher and really causes the reader to consider how he/she was taught, how he/she learned, and how she/he taught the children she contacted. It's uplifting, challenging, thought provoking and makes the reader want to get one for every teacher his children or grandchildren will meet along the way. You can read it in an hour or so and I can think of nothing you could do in that hour which would be more profitable.
