Rosenthal's book is a grownup bedtime story about her love affair with her rat, Tatti Wattles. I cried when I read the first page. If only everyone could have such a deep bond with their pet. Having a rat of my own, I can see why Rosenthal took pen to paper. But you don't have to have a Tatti Wattles of your own to curl up with this enchanting book. What makes these little creatures so special? Why don't we yelp with our sister females when a lone rat scurries past us? How come we know that rats are incredibly clean, intelligent, affectionate, and smart? Because once you've lived with a rat, you know. Rosenthal's intimate story starts with her saving Tatti from a sadistic performance artist. From there she enlightens us of the wonder and magic that Tatti brings her. "I was amazed until I realized that lab rats are bred to be hyper-gentle. Indeed, it wouldn't do to bite the hand the exposes you to radiation, that injects you with cancer," says Rosenthal. Indeed. Tatti travels with the author frequently-even to expensive restaurants. I can imagine all the ignorant rodent-haters who received an education of the rat kind as a result of Tatti Wattles's presence atop a crisp linen tablecloth flanked by flowers and a lighted candle. When you read Rosenthal's book, you'll understand why she doesn't break the animal - human bond. Even though Tatti Wattles has long past, his essence and spirit is alive in the author's whimsical drawings. Some are dreamlike, others are realistic pen drawings. What a moving tribute Rosenthal has given Tatti Wattles and all rats by telling Tatti's story in words and pictures. We know Rosenthal truly loved this little creature. He gave so much to her. She didn't expect it, nor did she imagine a rat could touch her heart. Well done, Rachel Rosenthal!

Tatti Wattles is a book about love, self-discovery, and teaching. This is the first bedtime story I've had read to me that I have actually loved. Tatti Wattles was a rat that performer Rachel Rosenthal discovered and took under her wing. Tatti became Rachel's close friend and led her on a journey to self-discovery, where she discovered her power animal was the rat. Tatti converted many rat-haters to rat lovers. After his death, he led Rachel to save other rats and to all around be a better person. This book is filled with fabulous illustrations of dreams and memories Rachel had with Tatti. This book is inspirational, and I recommend it to everyone. My favorite quote is from the end of Tatti Wattles: A Love Story: Spirit, soul, consciousness, and miracle reside in everything. Animals teach us about life and death, if we let them. And in between, about love, hate, tenderness, anger, pain, ruthlessness, loyalty, friendship, craftiness, resignation-every possible feeling with infinite shads and tones. To love an animal truly, is to truly love, with no expectation other than to delight in that love. To see and believe that is simple, and yet it is the most radical world view. Tatti Wattles, a little black rat Norvegian rat with good karma was here to prove it." -Rachel Rosenthal
