Book Overview

This slice-of-Shore-life novel combines the soul-searching of early adulthood, the ecstasy of surfing, and the barefoot quality of a summer by the sea. Set at a quintessential Jersey Shore beach in the 1980s, surfers, would-be artists, poets, and musicians revolve around each other in a world of waves and extraordinary sunsets, parties, strange dreams, love and longing, and the eternal quest for the meaning of life after Labor Day.

Terrific book

This is an extremely very well written book that captures the essence of surfing and life "down the shore".

A must read for any surfers on LBI

This book uses the locale of Long Beach Island, NJ as its backdrop - anyone who has ever been here for a visit at the time the book was written will recognize several of the locations that the characters visit. The central character of the book is Kring, a fun-loving but unambitious young man who aspires to become a professional surfer. Bruce Novotny has an excellent eye for detail - the characters are all very distinctive and the fact that the story takes place at the Jersey Shore gives the background a sense of familiarity to any locals or tourists. I find myself returning to this book every so often this time of year, when the temperatures go below freezing just about every day. The book is an entertaining account of the lives of several twentysomething surfers (along with their gremmie friends) on LBI - anyone who is a surfing enthusiast or lives at the Jersey Shore will probably enjoy this book.

best book EVER!!

This is the ultimate surf book. I live on LBI and both of my parents grew up here. I am a surfer, and have just finished reading this amazing tale by Bruce Novotny. This is the greatest book I have ever read. I could not put it down. I could relate to the characters, as well as the places, since I know all the settings they talk about in the book. It is a great tale of summer, the ones we all look forward to. THe book just adds to the greatness of surfing. Everyone who surfs, or lives near the beach, should read this book.

A great surf-story and strong first effort by Bruce Novotny

I really enjoyed this story of surf and summer life on the shore in New Jersey. Having experienced it first hand, I enjoyed the accurate portrayals, especially of the surrounding landscape, the sunsets, the shore. The characters are surf types and are shown like they are, with all the stupid jokes and local slang, with Kring's journey through the summer a strong thread to follow. Loved the character names. I especially enjoyed the dream sequence and the surf descriptions, as well as the party scenes. Brought a lot back to life for me. For anyone who's ever experienced a summer of youth at a shore, you'll enjoy this book, even if you've never surfed in your life. Great first effort by the author, hope to see LOTS more
