Jeff Usher has put together an inspirational guide not only for coaches in faith based youth athletic programs, but for mentors of children who are guided by faith themselves. "Take Them By the Hand" is a useful pragmatic tool for coaches of youth athletics. Usher recounts how he did not know the game of soccer at all when he began coaching children some 20 years ago, but shares with his readers very useful and pragmatic drills, exercises and coaching strategies of great value to youth coaches regardless of whether its a church league or a secular program. But for Christian based faith leagues this book is simply a must. Usher poignantly outlines the role his faith has played in bringing him to the this ministry and the more important role it plays in childrens' lives when they are exposed to the Word in conjunction with athletics. These lessons are funny, touching and most importantly spirtually inspiring. Even if you are not a coach now, you will think about it after reading this book. If you are a coach, you will be more inspired to continue, and better able to play a positive role in the enrichment of the children you are entrusted with. Finally, this book is a valuable tool for mentors of youth whatever the activity is. In the same vein of Tim Russert's "Wisdom of our Fathers" and Denzel Washington's book on mentors, Usher underlines the positive influence adults can have on the lives of children when they commit themselves to caring for and nurturing others. Be prepared to laugh, cry and feel your own spirit grow. Be prepared to be inspired. This is a wonderful, wonderful book.
