Book Overview

The scarcely populated town of Sweetland rests on the shore of a remote Canadian island. Its slow decline finally reaches a head when the mainland government offers each islander a generous resettlement package--the sole stipulation being that everyone must leave. Fierce and enigmatic Moses Sweetland, whose ancestors founded the village, is the only one to refuse. As he watches his neighbors abandon the island, he recalls the town's rugged history...

Best Canadian novel I ever read.

I read different 10 Canadian authors and all were kinda good but I was thinking I'm just too American. Was going to give up reading Books from the Canucks. When Micheal Crummey comes up with Sweetland. Wow!!!! The ending will keep you thinking for days. All kinds of theories on the end. Well done MC. Enjoy every minute.

Sweetland is one of my favourite books and author. He has written a few more, and poetry.

Loved this book- any Newfoundland story catches my eye. As Islanders vote to leave their their ancestral Island to relocate elsewhere, due to the cod moratorium, leads to how it affects a stubborn older man and his dog. Wow---- hard to put down. Have just bought another copy to send to friend.
