let me start by tellin u a little story...me and a friend of mine were debating about romance novels especially the historical ones as she thought they were really cheesy.I argued that if she gave them a chance, she would agree with me that they are infact entertaining!!so to resolve the issue, I agreed to read a book she recomended (american psycho by bret easton ellis) and she would read this particular book.well..let me tell you that as soon as she started to read the first chapter, she couldnt put it down.lol, she was up till about 3.00am reading it! The characters, Seraphina Carey and Richard Durrant were both very realistically conjured, and to be honest the protaganist seraphina, would have to be one of the best female charcters I have read.the majority of female characters written in historical romance novels are reeeeallly annoying and irritating. Seraphina on the other hand is a strong, determined and adventurous character, who isnt afraid to speak her mind. sweet treason begins with Richard Durrant, earl of Heywood. He is working for queen elizabeth, and spying on a group men and a woman who are discussing ways in which to assinate the queen.he believes that the identity of the woman is Lady seraphina Carey and is therefore ordered by the queen to marry her, in order to uncover her secrets and send her to her execution for treason. Seraphina who was once in a lovless marriage and is now widowed is against the idea, however when the earl convinces her that his intentions are that of loyalty, she agrees.however, the earl soon realises his mistake and it is a race against time, as he tries to find the real mastermind before his new found wife is led to her death. This is where there journey of betrayal, trust and love begins. I would recomend all to read this...if a cynical person such as my friend, can enjoy this book then i am sure that all fans of historical romance would too!
