An Oldie but Goodie

Heartfelt, poignant, suspenseful and romantic are all apt descriptions of Anne Cartier's novel Surrender to the Dawn. Set in Victorian England with a wonderful cast of characters this is a novel that is really memorable. Gwen Marsh is living a life almost in seclusion, three years earlier she was viciously attacked by a man known as the Lancer. She is the only female to survive the ordeal. She has a scar near her hairline and barely escaped with her life. She has been shunned by the ton and now just wants to have a normal life. The Earl of Stafford, Taylor, lost his wife to the Lancer six months after Gwen's attack. He is mourning the loss and has a thirst for justice. He knows that Gwen can help him in his quest to find the man. He approaches Gwen with the idea of hypnosis and she balks at the notion. She is determined to forget about the incident and wants no part of Taylor's schemes. She is angry and almost unlikable as she is unfeeling of his pain because she is wrapped up in her own hurtful past. After Gwen's fiancé breaks their betrothal she wanders into the night and catches pneumonia. She is nursed back to health by Taylor in his home. She is at first surly and mistrustful, believing Taylor is only kind to her so she will assist him in his quest. She changes her mind though about him as she notes his character and his devotion to his son. They become lovers and she is devastated to realize that Taylor is still very much in love with his dead wife. She abandons his home but is going to help him with his search. Together these two discover clues and follow leads throughout London. This brings them closer together and causes them to rethink their feelings about each other. Taylor realizes Gwen is not just an end to a means and Gwen sees that Taylor really is more caring than she originally believed. There are past secrets that threaten this couple along with a madman intent on claiming more victims. The dialogue both outer an inner is excellent, it is emotive and thoughtful. The leads, especially Taylor, are likeable and their actions clearly understood in the context of the story. This is an older novel, so a bit hard to find but worth the search.

Fresh, exciting read!

I found this paperback in the back of my closet, and a wonderful find it was. I'm disappointed this author only wrote (as nearly as I can determine) two other books, both of which I intend to order immediately. The writing and imagery are wonderfully imaginative, the story gripping and fast-paced. Cartier makes this story something different from the standard fare both with her wording and storyline. If you enjoy historical romance that is well-written, this book is a winner.
