Hebrew poetry from the exile

/All my walks begin with an inner autumn/ and an autumn outside. This is the tone of much of Priel's poetry a poetry of exile. Priel born in Lithuania lived much of his life in America and yet wrote in Hebrew the language of Israel. Priel's literary reputation paradoxically was great in the Jewish homeland. His poems are often about poetry itself. Perhaps the best way to convey their feeling is to simply cite one: VAN GOGH WILLIAMSBURG My pen wandering over this paper desert cannot, this time, capture on its point the pain flowing between endless shores , the image glowing hot and dark. Cool plaques of bronze revive the memory of a poet's distant afternoons today forams with a Van Gogh's colors of despair and a thousand sunset dreams shiver thewindow- panes. Tomorrow I shall slip to orchard skies of Torah Maybe there in Williamsburg where a pacified, brute summer reigns, theycork rich wines of ancient prayer And it may be the mirror of my room will no longer show the desert face of a Job-like Jew.
