The years 1865 to 1876 were a cataclysmic time in the settlement of the American West. The period began with the victory of the Union over the Confederacy and ended with the he crushing defeat of the 7th Cavalry by the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Westward expansion by the settlers spelled the death of the buffalo and consequently the American Plains Indians way of life. Many ex-confederate soldiers no longer wanting to live in the South with the occupying Union Army went west to start a new life. Likewise, the poor and oppressed European countries, especially Ireland and Germany flooded the shores of America in search of a better life and many of these immigrants were part of the westward movement. This story follows the lives of an ex-confederate soldier, a U. S. Cavalry soldier, an Irish immigrant and three young warriors from a small band of Oglala Sioux during this turbulent period. It shows how historical events caused their lives to become intertwined and culminates in the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
