A book for a lazy afternoon

I read a lot enjoying all types of books. This book is great for reading on a lazy afternoon. I especially loved the chapters where the main character expresses his feelings about having lost his wife and his quest for trying to start over. I have never visited some of the local spots of interest mentioned in the book and it made me want to visit the Portland area or maybe even live there! I loved the ending of this book and contrary to many who might want to guess at the ending it was a pleasant surprise. I would recommmend this book to others who enjoy a conflicted character who is easy to like. I wanted him to succeed in his quest of finding a new life. I would recommend this book to friends.

Enjoyable reading

I enjoyed the dialogs in this book. The conversations seemed very real. That might not make sense, but I really enjoyed the "realness" of this book. I loved the way Portland is described and brought to life. I felt that Mr. Messel really does have a keen insight into life and love. The book kept me intrigued, not wanting to put it down until I got to the end. Oddly enough, I was not surprised at the ending. I believe it shows us about the reality of life and that not everything has a fairy-tale ending, yet life can still be good as we learn and grow from all our life experiences. Read it!

Unexpected, but Still a Good Read

** SPOILER ALERT ** Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I almost felt like I could relate to some of the characters and I loved some of the detail that was put into describing the people and places. I also loved some of the ideas that came from the author. I'd never head that men were like bananas. That was a new one. Haha... I do have to say that I felt a little frustrated at the end. I confess that I am all about the sappy, cheesy endings and know that this is probably how reality would be, but was still surprised by how the author chose to end this story. I felt frustrated for Tom, and for me having read this whole book about how much he cared about Ericka just to have it all end. But looking past that, I still was engrossed in the book and am recommending it to some friends.
