Family saga with all its odd twists and colorful characters

Jack Todd was able to turn his family memoirs into a beautifully written novel that encompasses history from the California Gold Rush right through the Great Depression. He introduces some wonderful characters - beginning with Ebenezer Paint piloting a steamboat down the Mississippi River. The descriptions of life in the west are incredibly vivid. The hardships, struggles, and the joys of the Paint family make a great read. There were some odd twists, and some sad stories, but if you keep in mind that Todd was basing his book on a family memoir, you know that there are usually some unexpected twists and turns in most family histories. Knowing that there was probably embellished truth in each story made the book even more interesting for me.

Great Read

A great historical read that moves along without getting weighty in one area. The descriptions don't mince on the hard times these people had to endure. I loved this book.

A great page-turner

I really did enjoy this book and the descriptive language the author used to portray the American West. I would have really liked to have seen some sort of printed family tree to keep all of the relationships straight but all in all, it was a pretty absorbing story.

Sun Going Down by Jack Todd

This book should be made into a movie! It is a terrific story of the West being settled. It was wonderful to follow the generations of the characters and where they ended up.

Excellent!

This is the most magnificent book I have read in ages. I want to write to the author to tell him how much this story meant to me. I was glued to it; then my husband could not put it down. It has been shared many times with friends. So taken by the story, the writing skill I then read Desertion In The Time of Vietnam. Then I understood the author even more; his love for Nebraska. Desertion made me cry as I too lived through that era and it eats at me to this day. So, readers enjoy Sun Going Down and be glad we have men like this to tell our stories. Patricia Vitela
