Delightfully Engaging!

This is a wonderful tale of 24 year old Audie and 33 year old Beth, and what draws them together to potentially make a family of their own. More than a romance, this is a great portrait of the lives of two women and those who shape them. I liked it that I didn't fully know them as people within the first chapters. This is a warmhearted story where you get to learn about the back stories of the main characters as the story unfolds. I enjoyed following their growth both personally and professionally. If you liked this story you will LOVE the author's other novels - Mulligan Shaken House on Sandstone Just This Once Malicious Pursuit

Opposites Attract - Classic Tale of Yin and Yang

Before you read this, I have something to confess. MacGregor is one of my top 5 favorite authors - not just in this genre, in any genre. That said, you know this review is slightly biased. Even so, this book blew me away. This talented author brings together two wonderful characters in a difficult situation, and paints an enjoyable story with many layers. Audie is a wreckless young woman whose parents abandoned her as a child. She was then raised by her loving grandparents. A few years prior to the book's first pages, Audie's grandfather died while staying in a nursing home. Audie had always been suspicious about the circumstances of his death, so when she is forced to put her grandmother in a local nursing home she's very concerned. Audit doesn't want to lose the only remaining family she has to medical error. Over the course of several weeks, Audie begins to trust Beth, her grandmother's primary nurse. That trust uncovers an unlikely attraction that slowly develops into more. Beth is as surprised as anyone that she has fallen for Audie. As somewhat of a romantic loner, she knows they can't be more different. But she feels safe with Audie and wants to protect the younger woman as well. Over the course of the grandmother's illness, Audie begins to lose the last of her family while finding a new one to take her into the future. What a lovely story about two women who need each other, but don't know it. They have dimensionality, personality, beauty, and more. Their story is one of hope and love, and should not be missed. This will remain a permanent part of my personal collection.

Might Be Her Best Yet

One reason this book works is that both protagonists are so easy to like. Although they are very different, each is an honorable woman who does the best she can with the hand she's been dealt. Each faces a series of challenging and frightening situations with courage, and often with help and support from the other. Audie Pippin is still living somewhat on the wild side at the age of twenty-four. Nevertheless, she is compassionate and does worthwhile work at the local animal shelter. She is extremely devoted to the grandmother who raised her (Grammaw) and who has been forced by a severe stroke to move into a nursing home. At the nursing home Audie meets Beth Hester. Beth is an exceptionally good nurse, probably because she is genuinely fond of most of her patients. When she was nineteen, Beth became her younger sister's legal guardian, so she was forced to grow up fast and never had a chance to sow her wild oats or even to develop her carefree side. Now thirty-three, she is about to round out her career goals by completing college and moving up the nursing ladder to the position of RN. There is strong mutual attraction from the moment Beth and Audie meet, but neither woman can imagine that the other could be interested in her. Grammaw, an endearing woman whose health is declining, knows the score and does what little she can to encourage the fledgling relationship. The more I learned of these women, mostly through their conversations with friends, the more I pulled for them to find a way around their differences and get at the truth about their feelings for each other. The book tells the story of how that happens. It isn't all roses and clover. There are tough issues and tough choices involved, making it a realistic and worthwhile story. MacGregor has already established herself as a good writer, and this book might be her best yet.

Love Unfolds

Enjoy a slice of normal life told in an extraordinary way with this story of love. The pacing is just right as you watch the relationship unfold.

Satisfying on all levels

I've read everything this author has written and I'd have to say, this is probably her strongest work yet. Both of the characters are extremely likeable. The story is well-thought out and the pacing of the story is perfect. There's a slow build-up to Audi and Beth falling in love but there's enough room before the end of the book so that we get to see how their love is progressing. I like KG's work because she focuses on everyday life, normal people in normal situations. Yet her stories are far from boring. She writes sweet dialogue and steamy love scenes that you won't want to miss. I'd also recommend KG's The House on Sandstone if you're in the mood for a romantic comedy. And Mulligan, also by KG, is great if you'd like to see an older couple falling in love.
