Walter Rabetz presents photographs of people enjoying the twin pleasures of being at the beach while simultaneously being wherever the author of the book they are reading has taken them. Reading at the beach is an exquisite and unique pleasure The confluence of sun, sky, water, breeze, sand, sound, and words create a cocoon of sensuality, comfort and privacy. As our bodies feel the effects of this landscape, our minds are somewhere else. We have traveled to a world created through the cooperation of reader and author: one gives internal reality to the printed words of the other amid the delicious physical pleasures of the beach. Beach reading, unlike easy-chair reading (usually done in private), not only allows us a personal entrance into the book's interior world, but while reading at the beach, we also display our own selves to the elements and to the eyes of others. We may feel alone, but in reality, we are surrounded. Beach reading gives us the opportunity to be in two worlds at once: one in which we are exposed and observed, and the other in which we are on a journey with the author. Summer reading is a particular joy. We offer to you that joy observed.
