The novel investigates the very relevant and important themes that include identity, national identity, war, family, friendship, relations, and gender, etc. In the first part of the novel, the readers learn that challenges Iran had to face as a nation and how Marjane, the protagonist, used to understand Iran's political past through her naive perspective.The second part of the novel brings a great turning point in the protagonist's life. She is compelled to leave her country and go to a safer place, Vienna. Since she happens to have been brought up in a very strict religious society that had been experiencing war for a very long time, she is overwhelmed by the huge choice of the things that she finds in Vienna, thus compelling her to adapt to her new life in that foreign country.
