According to the author, the play is greatly inspired by his own experiences as a white man living in apartheid South Africa. Isabel is a white character in the play. He says that he was greatly affected by the way the people saw this relationship. The author further discloses that when he was an adult, he and several other amateur black actors worked together on a play in a ghetto outside Johannesburg. That is when the author got interested in doing activist theatre. He says that it led him to critique segregation.
