My cousin is mixed and I wanted to teach her about the importance of not judging people based off how dark their skin is.
This book is insanely beautiful and half way through she expressed how beautiful she thought this book was. She’s 6. We talked about how racism can occur as she gets older and how she is beautiful regardless of what people may say. We talked about the importance of seeing beauty from people inside and how beauty doesn’t come from how light or dark someone is, and the importance of seeing beauty within herself. At the end she told me she wanted to buy this book and that it was her favorite book and she thanked me for picking it out. I showed her the author and read to her the struggle the author went through from where she is from and she thought it was awesome that Lupita saw beauty and worth in herself because Lupita is beautiful. This book gets 10 stars from us
Excellent story about self love

Finally, a book for black girls to teach them to love who they are!
Sulwe talks to the young girls in a world and society whom expects them to want to resemble white people. Where lighter skin (I don’t mean perfectly white skin, but think Carmel instead of chocolate) is a better choice then being born with a darker shade of skin tone. Sulwe shows young black girls that no matter what their skin tone, they are beautiful.
In the current times, this message is important for everyone to understand and Sulwe does it in an excellent way for kids to grasp the information.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to teach about self love, and unfair prejudices.
