The BEST book on substitute teaching that I have found!

This is by far the best book to get you started or keep you inspired as a SUB. It has both serious and light-hearted advice that is practical and easy to implement. Lots of life lessons learned by the author are related in a simple way so that you feel as if you are chatting with an experienced teacher who is giving you all the best secrets they have. Loved it!

Finally

It is amazing that it has taken this long for someone to put together a "bible" for the substitute teacher. Without a doubt, Prof. Pressman has made a major contribution to the teaching profession. As someone that has been a teacher, counselor, adminstrator and education consultant, it is clear that this book needs to be required reading for anyone that plans to step into a classroom as a substitute. "BRAVO"

A great book for all teachers

Ms Pressman has covered the field of substitute teaching in a masterful way. It is a book that would serve professional teachers as well. Pages on "Web Resources" indicate the the up-to-date value of this book. It should be in the resource library of every school.

A Must-Have for ANY teacher!

Any teacher, substitute or full time, will benefit from reading this book. It is full of tips and pointers that will help you be a more effective teacher. Barbara Pressman, the author, is very insightful and offers great advice in this book. There are so many topics to cover, and she does a fantastic job being informative yet not excessively lengthy. If you are a first time teacher or substitute teacher, this book will give you an incredible start. If you are a veteran teacher, this book can even give you great new ideas. I am new to substitute teaching; I just started in September. I was off to a rocky start and unsure if I wanted to continue. My husband surprised me with this book and, after reading it, my teaching abilities have grown. Just by implementing a few of her suggestions here and there, I have better control of my classroom, I effectively communicate the material to the students, and I know what to do when I'm left short lesson plans and finish early. In short, Get This Book!!!

A "bible" for substitute teachers

As a school board member concerned with providing affordable and effective resources for all of our educators, including our substitute teachers, I found this to the best book currently on the market. The author apparantly was a wise and seasoned elementary ed teacher, before becoming a professor, who offers an impressive repertoire of tips, "a bag of tricks", advice to manage the classroom and to develop student achievement. It contains practical information for substitute teachers in a very useable format- it is thorough while not overly wordy. This book can augment the orientation of substitute teachers, enhance communication, and provide continuity of curriculum for your school system. She also provides a good amount of web and book resources for substitues who wish to enhance their teaching plans with additional tools and lessons.
