Stuck in the Middle is an excellent book that deals with difficulties that kids experience while growning up. Diversity and bullying are the two mentioned. While a picture book, I use this book with my middle school students, since it deals with the above topics so well.Hary the Horse is spotted, actually overly spotted. He feels he doesn't fit in with his fellow horsemates and thinks he looks more like a cow. Since his horsemates want nothing to do with him he decides to act like a cow. The cows don't want anything to do with him, since he can't moo, and he isn't round like a cow. Therefore, Harry is stuck in the middle with no one. One day he saves the life of a little girl. Then everyone wants to be his friend. Harry was wise enough to realize they only wanted to be his friend because he had done something unusual. He doesn't approve of "fine weathered" friends. At the end, Harry learns to accept himself for who he is, not worrying about his being "different" than the rest. Kids, especially middle schoolers, don't always fit the mold. This is an excellent story to show acceptance of yoursef. Romain also touches on the subject of bullying in the story. An excellent book that I would recommend to any age level. Too bad it is out of print.
