Book Overview

As the Mississippi and other midwestern rivers inundated town after town during the summer of 1993, concerned and angry citizens questioned whether the very technologies and structures intended to "tame" the rivers did not, in fact, increase the severity of the floods. "Structures in the Stream" an excellent source of information on early U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

This well-crafted overview of the early history of the Cross Florida Barge Canal will appeal to those interested in military, engineering, science, United States, and environmental history. Those looking for the Corps' later history should look elsewhere, especially to George Laycock's 1970 "The Diligent Destroyers." But this fine book offers strong analysis and a clear narrative regarding the evolution of the Corps of Engineers' reputation for using European engineering principles--based upon Enlightenment views of humans' dominion over the Earth--to manipulate the United States landscape.
