Social Justice in the Mission District of San Francisco in 1969

From Front of Book: "the Los Siete trial in San Francisco was a pivotal event in the law-and-order backlash that followed the college uprisings of 1968-69. Los Siete de la Raza were 'strictly ghetto property' -- seven young men from the ghetto who had lived through, and helped lead, the new wave of latin radicalism generated when the colleges were opened to minority students. In May 1969 the seven were picked off the streets to stand trial for the murder of a policeman: their trial was a direct assault on the new consciousness growing in the ghettoes. Marjorie Heins shows the Los Siete incident was both a victory and a defeat for the new latin radicalism. Los Siete were acquitted -- their defense, led by attorney Charles Garry, demolished the police case and exposed a shattering story of police racism and brutality. Then continued police harassment put two of the seven in jail for burglary and drove the others underground. But by the time the marathon trial was over, a major grassroots movement had developed to support Los Siete, and the seven left behind a brown movement strengthened and toughened by the Los Siete trial. 'Strictly Ghetto Property' goes behind the immediate events and explores the full background--the ghetto experience, the student uprisings, early contacts with brown revolutionaries and the Black Panther party -- that made the Los Siete incident a key political event. Marjorie Heins's book is a unique story of a ghetto community and of the transformation of 'street brothers' into revolutionaries." ********** Contents Include: 1 - Hidalgo's Statue 2 - Strictly Ghetto Property 3 - We Wanted to Start the Revolution Then and There 4 - The Man 5 - The Weird Experience 6 - Whitey's Building 7 - Beginning to Get It Together 8 - Mayday 9 - Serving the People Doesn't Mean Being a Waitress 10 - In the Halls of Justice 11 - The Community Must Take Control 12 - Mind If I Call You Piggy? 13 - Nobody Walk Every Day the Same 14 - Power to the People, Streeter 15 - All-American Boy 16 - The Prosecution Doesn't Understand 17 - To Fight Another Day
