Self-promotion tips for musicians

I found this book refreshing in that it assumes, unlike most "music business" books, that your goal is to get your music out there but not necessary get a huge record deal (in fact, it doesn't really talk about labels at all). It focuses on all the little things any local band can and should do in order to promote themselves, including: -Knowing who you are as a band - choosing an appropriate name, logo, look, and venues to play at, and perfecting the 30-second description to give when someone asks "what do you sound like?" -Building a fan base that includes more than your friends and family, who won't keep coming to your shows forever -Networking with other local bands -Recording a demo - DIY or studio? -Building a press kit, including how to get press when you don't have any yet For the most part, this is not totally new information, and some of it will probably seem self-explanatory to DIY musicians. However, I appreciated having all the information in one place, and will be sure to refer back to the book as my band progresses through the different steps (recording, getting shows, getting people to come to them, going for indie radio play, etc).

AWESOME READ, GREAT BOOK

This book is great! I've been semi-serious about my music for many years and tried lots of times to get my act together, but this book seems to be just what the doctor ordered to finally make it happen. It's not self-help treacle, just lots of really smart ideas on how to get the word out there about my music. It's well organized and really funny, too. I highly recommend it to every musician who's struggling for that big break.
