What a great book

We read this when my son was in 1st grade, a couple of years ago. Only 1 of my kids were in school st the time but the 2 littles joined. We all couldn't wait to read this book. We supplemented it as part of our history curriculum. I highly recommend, for ALL ages & grades. We will probably pick it back up again as I now have almost all of my kids in schooling.

Be VERY careful of the edition you select!

I am quoting here from the review of another purchaser. THANK YOU to that reviewer!!! That review kept me from making a purchase I would have regretted. I purchased the Yesterday's Classics edition. "I purchased a copy of this book from Christian Liberty Press to use with our Beautiful Feet American History. Upon opening the book I was devistated to find the stories had been "rewritten/sanitized" to make them politically correct/less offensive and to fit the theology of the Reformed Church/Christian Liberty School. " Know what you are buying!!!

Classic Stories As They Were Originally Penned

I purchased a copy of this book from Christian Liberty Press to use with our Beautiful Feet American History. Upon opening the book I was devistated to find the stories had been "rewritten/sanitized" to make them politically correct/less offensive and to fit the theology of the Reformed Church/Christian Liberty School. Thank goodness Lisa Ripperton and her staff at Yesterday's Classics are in business! The title pretty much says it all. Yesterday's Classics are reprinted books of classics as they were originally penned by the author. In the post modern 21st Century it is nice to know you can still purchase classic works at an affordable price.

Wonderful storytelling

I borrowed this book to read it to my daughter when she was in second grade. She loved it. She's now in 6th grade and still remembers many details of the book because they had that much of an impression on her. You can imagine yourself being with these Pilgrims, waiting in the dark on the beach for the boat to arrive. Now that my son is 4, I wanted to make sure I had a copy of my own to read to him. This is definitely one to add to your personal library.

An excellent read - my kids BEGGED to do History!

We read this book as a part of our homeschool History curriculum this year. It was very informative and entertaining. My children (ages 6 and 8) absolutely loved it. We have the older version, and my kids didn't even mind the lack of color and the sparse illustrations. They begged me ,"One more chapter...please, Mom?!" I would say the only thing I did not care for in this book was the way they portray the Indians. Other than Squanto, Samoset and Massasoit, all of the other Indians are viewed as 'savages' (and not very intelligent ones, at that.) In the last few chapters, they are even used as 'comic relief.' She also has them speaking the word 'Ugh' a lot...such as "Ugh! White squaw bring me cider!" I thought that was a little unrealistic, and insulting as well. The information on the Pilgrims is wonderful, and she really brought their journey alive. If you can overlook the Indian parts, I would highly recommend this book.

Great Read-aloud!

My children and I loved reading about the Pilgrims. I was not educated about their lives like my children are. Thisbook is very informative and right on their levels. We read this when they were 5 and 9.

The detailed, everyday life of those pioneering Pilgrims

Superbly written by Margaret Pumhrey and wonderfully narrated by Marguerite Gavin, Stories Of The Pilgrims is especially appropriate for young listeners with informed and entertaining accounts of how the Pilgrims left England to escape religious oppression in the native England, their escape to Holland, and their eventual, hazardous crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in the sailing ship Mayflower to arrive in America. Their story continues with descriptions of the early days of Pilgrim settlement in New England. Soundly founded on historical facts and records, the individual stories comprising this outstanding 4 hour, 30 minute, complete and unabridged audiobook presentation brings the listener the detailed, everyday life of those pioneering Pilgrims and their families as they struggled to survive while maintaining their faith in the New World.
