A fun, moving page turner

What a delightful story, a fantasy within a moment in history, that connects us to a past the comes alive through the eyes of a nerdy tween. I read it in one sitting - well, I did take a break to eat dinner - chuckling, chortling and getting misty eyed, wishing it wouldn't end. Good job!

Great Book

Stonewall Hickman is one cool teenager who learns a lot about himself, and yes, he is your typical teenager who would rather play with his Gameboy , sleep in, and watch movies rather than go with his parents to civil war reenactments. When he goes back in time and is in the midst of the Battle of Bull Run he finds out that he wishes he'd paid more attention to the reenactments, but have no fear he has help from his ancestor, Cyrus, who is really a hero. Stonewall has a mission, and that is to stop Dupree from changing the course of history. What book about the Civil War would be complete without a southern bell by the name of Ashby who Stonewall can't believe is talking to him. Ashby helps him in his quest to keep Dupree from messing up the history books, and did I mention that Dupree is Ashby's father? The book keeps you interested, and the reader comes away knowing more about the Civil War. Great read! I look forward to a sequel.

Stonewall Hinkleman and the Battle of Bull Run Stonewall Hinkleman made me remember my teenage years when I would rather spend time with my friends than my parents. As the mother of a teenager, I could relate to Stonewall and Ashby's talk of boredom, the desire to play Game Boy, and get on My Space. Hemphill and Riddleburger did a great job of working historical facts into the story. I learned a few things about the Civil War without even realizing it. Here's a book that could be read for pure enjoyment or to supplement classroom study. Few books leave me wanting to read the sequel, but this one left me wishing I could ask questions like: will Stonewall and Ashby find that they go to the same school; will they begin a romance or share another adventure using the bugle? And what about her father? Has Mr. Dupree given up his plan to help the south win the war? Great book-there has to be a sequel!

Stonewall is a typical tween, being forced to spend time with his parents and their hobby of Civil War re-enacting when he would rather be anywhere else, doing anything else. He has the attitude! But then a magic bugle takes him on a journey back into the time of the Battle of Bull Run. Trying very hard not to alter the course of history, Stonewall witnesses war and the horrors of the era first hand, but still manages to keep his attitude. This is a delightful children's book, and timely as we begin the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. I hope we see more of Young Stonewall.

Book Review: Stonewall Hinkleman and the Battle of Bull Run

Teenager Stonewall Hinkleman belongs to a family of Civil war reenactors. He is transported through time back to the Battle of Bull Run and discovers that Nathan Dupree, another time traveler from Hinkleman's own time, is bent on changing the outcome of the Civil war. Not only must Stonewall stay alive in the middle of the battle, but somehow he must prevent Dupree from carrying out his evil plans. The book provides a vivid description of the battle and Stonewall finds that the battle and the participants are not what he was expecting. The book is well written with enough humor to balance some of the horrors of war.
