Nice reference book for stitches. I was looking primarily for needlepoint stitches; this book includes stitches for embroidery and crewel, but does have a fairly good selection for needlepoint. The colored pictures are wonderful to show the entire stitch and the explanations are included. Very nice book.

Stitch Sampler is exactly what I was looking for.

Stitch Sampler: The Ultimate Visual Dictionary to Over 200 Classic Stitches This book is an ideal "how to" reference of 200+ embroidery and needlepoint stitches, their variations, and uses. The stitches are grouped into 4 general categories, great photos of completed stitches and steps to complete stitch. Also covers types of tools, threads, fabrics and what works best for different visual effects. It even gives tips on completing and framing completed pieces. It has a detailed index which makes it easy to find what you're looking for and pages and pages of sharp color photos. I don't write reviews (first one)--- too busy!! But this is a book that's worth buying.

Stitch Dictionary covering many types of embroidery

This is not a new book, but is one which is new to me. I have to admit I ignored it because I figured it was embroidery on cloth, not on a counted ground. But there is lots here which is worthwhile. First off, there is a needlepoint section, which has about 75 stitches divided into groups. Then there are dozens of other stitches, grouped by function (border, filling and openwork). Every stitch is photographed in color, showing not only the completed stitch, but one or more photos showing construction. From a needlepointer's point of view. even the non-needlepoint stitches are useful. They are all stitched on evenweave fabric. To adapt them to needlepoint, just count threads. At the beginning of the stitch dictionary there is a gallery which pictures every stitch, lists it name and tell the page where it can be found. This makes looking for a stitch so easy. I keep thinking of great ways to use these new stitches.

A very good book of "cross-stitch" embroidery stitches

Very good book, pictures are shown in color with very good illustrations of the stitches. Variations for various stitches are also shown which are appealing. I am an embroidery lover, after having this book I feel I can make thousands of beautifull unique pieces. A great book in all for beginners as well as for others who do embroidery. I would definitely recommend this book.

great samples

after having purchased this and examining the contents I have decided to use this book in my cross-stitch class as a reference and recommend it for purchase to all my students. It is easy to read and the written instructions are excellent. I have had and look at many books and have finally found a book that covers all the various stitches and their use. The photos are so clear a semi-experienced person could look at and do the stitch. This is truly the best instructional book on stitching that I have been able to find.
