Though it is obvious that Allen was, to paraphrase the words of Barbara Brown Taylor in her book "Leaving Church," cut deeply by the swordplay of the Christian cross, grace lies in the title. How many others, suffering post-traumatic stress from years of childhood bondage to fundamentalist ideas, take the risk to examine a God who sought to redeem us through love rather than fear?
Poignant, funny, fascinating and well-written!

After seeing this book advertised in a magazine, I asked for it for Christmas. I received it, read it, and was NOT disappointed! The author paints a frightening (and at times amusing) portrait of growing up in a dysfunctional, fundamentalist Christian family. She even spent a year at Bob Jones University! Fortunately, she slowly but surely came to realize you can be a Christian and not take the Bible literally, that Christianity can be more about what you CAN do instead of a list of "should-nots." Well-written, interesting, sad, but funny at times, too. I recommend it.
