With the help of his grandmother, his dead father's best friend, and his own best friend--a math whiz--Mickey prepares to compete in the most important pool championship of his life, despite his mother's reservations.
For a person who likes to play pool, this is a good book to read. If you dont really like to play pool, this is still an incredible book. This book is by a fantastic author and she wrote this book like she was the main character. When I read this book I didnt really like to play pool but when I was reading this book I could veiw all the book and when they were playing pool in the book it seemed like I was one of the fans watching the game. It is kind of sad when it talks about the kids dad dieing but when his best friend comes and teaches him like his dad taught his friend it cheered the boy up and he got really good at the sport pool and started to win alot more games and their is this one boy who the boy hated he might of beat but your going to have to read the book to find out what happens to the boy and other awesome events. I will have to stop writing now or I'm going to spoil the book for you.
Proud, with a Stick in his Hand

The book I am recommending is called Sticks, by Joan Bauer. This book takes place in a modern day pool hall. The main character is Mickey Vernon. Mickey wants to win a pool tournament so badly that he would do anything to win it. He is a very determined boy. Arlen is Mickey's best friend and is a math wiz who helps Mickey with some of his pool shots. Mickey couldn't get a better friend than Arlen. When a kid named Sledgehammer begins to whack balls into pockets like a giant machine, and Mickey doubts he can win. Sledgehammer wants to win the pool tournament too. I love this book because you just don't want to stop reading it once you've begun. I recommend this book because it shows you how a determined person can really be to reach a goal, and that you should always try your best.
World's Pool Champion

Sticks is a realistic fiction book written by Joan Bauer. Mickey's father was the world's pool champion for a lot of years. Mickey Vernon wanted to be the world's pool champion too after his father died. This story takes place in Mickey's house, Vernon's pool hall, the school, and the library of Cruckston, New Jersey. This main character Mickey wanted to be the world's pool champion. In order to be the world's pool champion, he needs to beat Buck Pender who is an awesome player and Sledgehammer who is a murderer at pool. Joseph Alvarez (Mickey's father's friend) is teaching Mickey pool and told him not to play Buck, but poor Mickey didn't listen and lost and got in a fight with Buck and hurt his hand. Is Mickey ever be the world's pool champion? I will recommend this book because I learned that without math you couldn't do a lot of fun things.
Exciting Pool Story

Sticks is a breathtaking story from Joan Bauer. This realistic fiction from Joan Bauer is a book is a book you can't put down. Wham! At the pool table Mickey Vernon is using his blinders and tries to shoot the nine ball. Mickey is ten years old and has brown hair. His smooth skin has freckles and his hand has many band-aids. In Cruckston New Jersey is where Mickey lives. You can tell by reading the story it is nowadays. The Vernon's pool hall is having a pool championship. If somebody wins the pool champion then that person will get a red shirt. To win that red shirt, Mickey has to beat Buck Pender. He is a real bully and also he is a tough pool player. Joesph Alveraz comes to Cruckston New Jersey becomes Mickey's coach. Mickey gets better on pool each day. One day Joesph Alveraz brings his enormous truck and goes to a trip. While Joesph Alveraz is having a lovely trip, Mickey doesn't listen to Joesph Alveraz and plays Buck. Buck made Mickey break his arm. His best friend Arlen was down in the mouth. Is Mickey going to win the red shirt? I know but don't think you know. My reason for recommending this book is because it was a interesting book that kept me reading and reading from one chapter to the next.

Sticks by Joan Bauer is a great book! It is my favorite book in the world! It's about Mickey Vernon, a pool player, and how he wants to win the Pool Championship. When a former of Mickey's mom shows up, he offers to give Mickey a few pointers. Mom says no, she doesn't trust him. Then, when she says yes, Mickey is appoluded.
